Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Of undetermined origin. Speculated to be of expressive origin, derived from *sъskati (“to hiss”) + *-ьlъ, or less likely to descend from *sъsati (“to suck”) + *-ьlъ. Another hypothesis, based on the dialectal variants *sujękъ m / *sujęca f, proposes an origin from *sovati (“to shove, to ditch into”) (related to Proto-Slavic *sudlica (“spear”)). This hypothesis, however, demands Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value) to reflect a reduplicated form of the root Proto-Balto-Slavic *śauˀ-.
