Etymology

Derksen: From Proto-Balto-Slavic *suś- / *suk-, from Proto-Indo-European *sewḱ-. Cognate with Latvian sùkt, Latin sūcus (“juice”). Proto-Indo-European root variant *sewǵ- produces English suck (Proto-Germanic *sūkaną), Latin sūgō (“to suck”) (inf. sūgere).
Chernykh: Derived from earlier *sъpsati, from Proto-Indo-European *sew(H)-, with extended variants *sewp-, *sewb-. Cognate with Gothic 𐍃𐌿𐍀𐍉𐌽 (supōn, “to spice, to season”), Old English sūpan (“to drink, to slurp”), English sup, Sanskrit सूप (sū́pa, “soup”).
