Etymology

Together with Proto-Slavic *skuti (“to pluck hair, weeds”), supposed to be from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewbʰ-. Akin to Lithuanian skùbti (“to hurry”), Proto-Germanic *skeubaną (“to shove”). Further related appears to be Albanian humb (“to get lost”) via a nasal infix.

Per Trubachev and Vasmer, distantly related to Proto-Slavic *čupъ. Trubachev mentions as possible descendants Serbo-Croatian ćùba, Slovene čọ́ba, however, per Snoj[1] they may actually reflect Proto-Slavic *čьnoba.
