Alternative reconstructions

Etymology

Perhaps derived from *asëdak (“to live”) (potentially with +‎ *-ja) and ultimately from Proto-Uralic *ëśe-. Alternatively possibly:

  • Derivative from a Proto-Uralic root *ate +‎ *-ja (implying *acja), compare eastern Khanty от (ot).
  • Borrowing from Proto-Germanic *(uz)andiją (implying *acja), for which there appears to be little evidence however; the proposed descendant Swedish ärende (“task, errand”) is from Proto-Germanic *airundiją.
  • As per Vershinin, relation to Erzya азкс (azks, “story”) (from азомс (azoms, “to offer; tell; curse; promise”))[1], which is not compatible with any of these.
