Etymology
Calque of English nautical mile, formed as a compound of 海 (kai, “sea, ocean”) + 里 (ri, “league, unit of distance”). First appears in 1872.[1]
Also encountered in some historical texts[2] with the kanji spelling 海哩, using the alternative 哩 (ri, “mile”) character.
