United Nations

The United Nations (UN) is an intergovernmental organization formed to promote international cooperation among the countries of the world. It currently has 193 member countries.[1]

It was formed on October 24, 1945 after World War II and replaced the League of Nations. The headquarters are in New York City, United States.

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian, and Spanish are the official languages of the United Nations.

Purposes

  • To keep peace throughout the world, after the World Wars;
  • To develop friendly relations among nations;
  • To help nations work together to improve the lives of poor people, to conquer hunger, disease and illiteracy, and to encourage respect for each other's rights and freedoms;
  • To be a centre for harmonizing the actions of nations to achieve these goals.
