Grant DeVolson Wood was an American painter. He was born in Anamosa, Iowa on February 13, 1891, and died on February 12, 1942 in Iowa City, Iowa. In 1913, he enrolled at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Wood was married to Sara Sherman Maxon from 1935 to 1938. Wood taught painting at the University of Iowa's School of Art from 1934 to 1941. He was a regionalist and spoke often on the movement. He is best known for his pictures of the American Midwest, especially American Gothic.
