Vertical-lift bridge is a type of movable bridge which contains a span which rises vertically, using hydraulic jacks or pivoting bascules, while remaining parallel to its closed position. The span is suspended between lift towers at each end when open. The purpose is to create a larger space beneath the bridge to allow the ships to pass. Unlike bacule bridge this space is limited by the extent of span rise.
