  2. (reflexive with von or transitive) to say goodbye to someone; to take leave of someone
  3. (transitive) to see off; to dismiss
  4. (transitive, politics) to adopt; to pass (a law, resolution, etc.)

Usage notes

  • Both reflexive and transitive uses are possible when the subject is the host who stays behind. Only reflexive use is possible referring to those leaving.
