Etymology

From Proto-Albanian *tsikā, derived from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeh₃- (“to sharpen”), compare Armenian սուր (sur, “sharp; knife”).[1] Often considered to be the source of Latin sica.[2] Meyer (1891) considers a borrowing from Latin sīca (“a poniard, curved dagger”), but this is unlikely and outdated as Albanian was misunderstood as a Latin language[3]. Cognate with Sanskrit शा (śā, “to sharpen”).
