Possibly derived from Middle Low German terlinc (die, cube), from tēre (package) + -linc (diminutive suffix), due to the cubic shape of things packaged for transport. Compare German Low German terling, Swedish tärning, Danish and Norwegian terning, Icelandic teningur and Faroese terningur.
