Inherited from Proto-Slavic *sadìti, from Proto-Balto-Slavic *sāˀdītei, from Proto-Indo-European *sodéyeti (“to seat, to cause to sit”), causative of *sed- (“to sit”). Cognates include Sanskrit सादयति (sādáyati) and German setzen.
