Etymology

From northern Middle High German roten, Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value) and Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value), from Proto-Germanic *rudōną. Cognate with Dutch rooien. Also akin to English rid, Danish rydde.

The variant rotten (still in ausrotten) shows a more southern phonetical development. However, most Upper German dialects used the verb reuten, from Old High German riutan, which is related but not identical with the former.
