From Middle High German rīmen (“to compose, put into verse, rhyme”), from Old High German rīman (“to count, enumerate”), from Proto-Germanic *rīmaną (“to count”), from Proto-Indo-European *rēy- (“to add, fit, count”). Cognate with Middle Low German rîmen (“to appraise, show honour, put into verse, rhyme”).
