Etymology
From Proto-Hmong-Mien *ŋiuŋ (“water buffalo, cow”). Cognate with Iu Mien ngongh. Most likely a more recent reborrowing from Mandarin 牛 (niú) ("cow") because of the change in the ending vowel.
