mbratë
Albanian
Alternative forms
- mbrat
- mbërat (archaic)
Etymology
Possibly inherited from Proto-Indo-European *bʰor-eh₂-teh₂,[n 1] from the root *bʰer- (“to carry”), prefixed with n-. Compare a possible close parallel Latin forda (“pregnant cow”).[1]
Derived terms
- mbëratësë
Notes
- The unexpected outcome -a- from *-eh₂- may be explained as irregular metathesis of the laryngeal: *-eh₂teh₂ > *-ah₂tah₂ > *-atʰah₂.[1]
