From Proto-Polynesian *ma-ramaa (“to shine”) (compare with Hawaiian malama, Tongan māma), from Proto-Oceanic *ma-ramaʀ (“to shine”), from Proto-Oceanic *rama (compare with Fijian rama,)[1] from Proto-Oceanic *ramaʀ, from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *damaʀ (“tree resin”). (compare with Malay damar)[2] Doublet of marama, rama, and mā.
