Borrowed through Vulgar Latin from Late Latin mastichinus (gummy)[1] (compare Romanian mesteacăn (birch), Sicilian mastigona (piney thistle)), from Ancient Greek μαστίχινος (mastíkhinos), from μαστίχη (mastíkhē, mastic).
