From a nasalised variant of Arabic الإجّاص (al-ʔijjāṣ), from إجّاص‎ (ʔijjāṣ) with fused definite article اَل‎ (al-). Compare Algerian Arabic لنجاص‎ (lanjāṣ), Moroccan Arabic لنجاص‎ (langāṣ) or نجاص‎ (ngāṣ), and South Levantine Arabic إنجاص‎ (injāṣ).
