From Ottoman Turkish قوجاق (kucak), from قوچمق (koçmak, to hug), ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kūč- (to embrace). Compare dialectal kuç- (to hug).

Cognate with Kazakh құшақ (qūşaq, embrace), Kyrgyz кучак (kucak, embrace), Southern Altai кучак (kučak, embrace, armful), Uzbek quchoq (embrace), Uyghur قۇچاق (quchaq, embrace), Bashkir ҡосаҡ (qosaq, embrace), Turkmen gujak (embrace).
