From Arabic جَزَى‎ (jazā, “to requite”). The imperfect tense shows assimilation *niġżi → niżżi. The rare perfect is a backformation from the imperfect on the model of such a verb as idda, from Arabic أَدَّى‎ (ʔaddā).
