From earlier hērōro, comparative form of hēr (“gray-haired, old; noble, venerable”), from Proto-Germanic *hairaz (“grey; old, distinguished”). Compare the same semantic development from Latin senior to Old French seignor, whence the feudal meaning was loaned to Old High German in Carolingian times.
