From Proto-Brythonic *webussu (compare Cornish gweus, Breton gweuz), compound of *we- (compare gwefl (animal lip)) and Proto-Celtic *bussu (lip) (compare Scottish Gaelic bus, Old Irish busóc (kiss)), from Proto-Indo-European *bus- (to kiss) (compare Latin bāsium (kiss), Lithuanian bučiúoti, Albanian buzë (mouth), Persian بوسیدن (bôsidan, to kiss)).
