From Proto-West Germanic *fergunī, from Proto-Germanic *fergunją. Cognate with Old Norse fjǫrgyn (“earth, land”), Gothic 𐍆𐌰𐌹𐍂𐌲𐌿𐌽𐌹 (fairguni, “mountain”).
