Unknown. Thought to be from Gothic,[1] itself possibly from Ancient Greek Ἄρεως ἡμέρα (Áreōs hēméra, literally “day of Ares”),[2] the origin of the Latin translation diēs Martis, which was calqued into Proto-Germanic as *Tīwas dagaz, whence ziostag.
