Etymology

From Proto-Semitic *ḥapaś- (to search, gather). Cognate with Arabic حَفَشَ‎ (ḥafaša, “to gather”) and Biblical Hebrew חָפַשׂ‎ (ḥɔp̄áś, “to search”).
