Perhaps from Proto-Eastern Algonquian *šīwāp- (“blue”), from Proto-Algonquian *ši·wa·p-, compare Mohegan-Pequot siwôpisuw (“he is blue”), Cree sîpihko- (“blue”). Cognate with Munsee shiiwaapeekulush (“bluebird”).
