From Ottoman Turkish بویاجی (boyacı, dyer), from Proto-Turkic *bodagčï, derived from Proto-Turkic *bodag (paint, dye). Equivalent to boya (paint) + -cı. Cognate with Bashkir буяусы (buyawsı), Kazakh бояушы (boäuşy), Kyrgyz боёкчу (boyokcu), Tatar буяучы (buyawçı), Uyghur بوياقچى (boyaqchi), Uzbek boʻyoqchi.
