Etymology
From Middle High German beswern, from Old High German biswerian (“to beg solemnly, ceremoniously, urgently or emphaticly”). Equivalent to be- + schwören. Cognate with Dutch bezweren and Middle Low German besweren (whence Swedish besvärja, Danish besværge and Norwegian Bokmål besverge).
