From Middle High German ūzdrücken, equivalent to aus- (“out”) +‎ drücken (“to press”). In the sense “to express” a calque of Latin exprimere. Compare Dutch uitdrukken.

1. (transitive) to squeeze, to squeeze out

   Benutz die Saftpresse, aber drück die Schalen dann noch mal kräftig mit der Hand aus.

   Use the juicer, but then squeeze the peels out firmly once more with your hands.

2. (transitive) to stub out (a cigarette)

   Er drückte seine Zigarette aus.

   He stubbed out his cigarette.

3. (usually transitive) to express

   Ich weiß nicht, wie ich das ausdrücken soll.

   I don’t know how to express this.

   Lassen sie es mich noch einmal etwas anders ausdrücken.
