From ar- + Proto-Celtic *sistati, the latter from *stísteh₂ti, a reduplicated derivative of *steh₂-. Compare Latin sistō, Ancient Greek ἵστημι (hístēmi) and Sanskrit तिष्ठति (tiṣṭhati).
