Etymology
From Middle High German verstant, verstont, ferstant, from Old High German firstant (“intellect, wisdom”), from Proto-West Germanic *frastand, from Proto-Germanic *frastandaną (“to understand”), equivalent to ver- + Stand. Cognate with Middle Low German vörstant (whence Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value)), Dutch verstand. Related to verstehen.
