Etymology
Sino-Vietnamese word from 泰蘭, composed of 泰 (“Thai”) and 蘭 (“-land”), coined with the phonetic morpheme 蘭/兰 (lán) by analogy with the European names of Thailand. In proper Mandarin, the country is known as 泰國/泰国 (Tàiguó), with the semantic morpheme 國/国 (guó, “country; state; -land”) instead.
