17th century, from Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value). Further origin uncertain. Plausibly from an old, though unattested, diminutive of Middle Low German tō (“bitch, female dog”), in the form of an Old Saxon *tōhila. The Middle Low German is cognate with archaic German Zohe (“bitch”), perhaps related with ziehen (“to pull, rear”).
