Etymology
Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *(s)per- (“to spring, to sprout”) + *-ǫtъ, related to Proto-Slavic *prędati (“to lead”), Proto-Germanic *sprintaną (“to prance”).
Vasmer and Machek suggest original meaning leap → shoot, sprout with similar semantic shift as Russian побе́г (pobég, “flight; fig. sprout”). Possibly related to Proto-Slavic *prytь (“outbreak”), Proto-Germanic *sprutô (“sprout”).
