Etymology

From *po- +‎ *čiti[1], from the root *kʷyeh₁-. Akin to Sanskrit चिर (cirá, “long”), Avestan 𐬱𐬁𐬌𐬙𐬌𐬨‎ (šāitim, “happiness”), Latin quiēs (“rest”), Latin tranquīlus, tranquillus (“tranquil”), Proto-Germanic *hwīlō (“pause, while”).
