Etymology

Uncertain. Possibly from the sparsely attested Proto-Slavic *kobti (“to grasp, to forecast”), *kobati (“to compete”) + *-ьcь, of expressive nature from Proto-Indo-European *kabʰ- (“to seize, to hold”). Resembles Proto-Germanic *habukaz (“hawk”), Albanian gabonjë (“eagle”).
