From Proto-Balto-Slavic *bérˀmin, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰérHmn̥. Cognate with Sanskrit भरीमन् (bhárīman, nourishment, subsistence) and parallel to Ancient Greek φέρμα (phérma, fetus, fruit in the womb), Sanskrit भर्मन् (bhárman, support, preservation) (without -H-).
