Proto-Slavic
Etymology
Uncertain. Has been compared with Ancient Greek δολφóς (dolphós, “gut”), δελφῡ́ς (delphū́s, “womb”), Sanskrit गर्भ (garbha, “fetus, womb”) from Proto-Indo-European *gʷelbʰ-, however, (per Vasmer) semantically unsatisfactory. Alternatively, akin to Ancient Greek γλάφω (gláphō, “to dig, to hollow”), Proto-Germanic *kulbaz (“round object”), possibly Proto-Celtic *gulbā (“beak”) from Proto-Indo-European *gelH- (“to flay, to scrape”).
