Reconstruction:Proto-Indo-European/bel-

This Proto-Indo-European entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Proto-Indo-European

Root

*bel- (imperfective)

  1. strength

Reconstruction notes

This root is most likely not native to Proto-Indo-European, and was probably a later borrowing, since word initial *b- only occurs in one other root (*bak-), which is also posited to be non-native due to the consistent presence of the a-grade throughout descendant words and the alternation between geminate and nongeminate *-kk- and *-k- in the derivative terms.
