Etymology

From Proto-Finno-Permic *kaswa-, whence also Erzya касомс (kasoms).[1] Possibly an ancient loan from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewks- (from *h₂ewg- (to grow)), with regular metathesis from *kawsa-. Alternatively a substrate borrowing.[2]
