Reconstruction:Latin/critare

This Latin entry contains reconstructed terms and roots. As such, the term(s) in this entry are not directly attested, but are hypothesized to have existed based on comparative evidence.

Latin

Etymology

Most likely an evolved from of the Classical quirītāre. For the loss of the first vowel, cf. drictus < dīrectus.

Has been suggested to be a borrowing from a Germanic *krītan, but per both Coromines and Von Wartburg this is rather unlikely. The similarity is probably due to their both having an onomatopoeic origin.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /kriˈtare/

Verb

*crītāre (Proto-Italo-Western-Romance)

  1. to cry out, shriek

Reconstruction notes

The voiceless /-t-/ in much of Iberia has been attributed by Coromines to an early 'expressive reinforcement' to */kritˈtare/.
