From Proto-Germanic *wajjuz, from Proto-Indo-European *weh₁y- (β€œto turn; wind; bend”). Akin to Swedish vΓ€gg, Old English wΗ£Δ‘.

The grammatical gender is uncertain; based on its derivates it could be either masculine or feminine. Proto-Germanic *wajjuz suggests masculine, however.
