From Middle High German gebac, from Old High German *gibak, *gibah, from Proto-West Germanic *gabak (something baked, pastry), collective form of *bak, from Proto-Germanic *baką (baked goods, baking). Cognate with Middle Low German gebak (whence Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value)), Dutch gebak, Old English ġebæc.
