From Middle High German gülle (“puddle”), ultimately from Proto-Germanic *guljō, perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰeyh₁- (“to gape, yawn”), whence Proto-Germanic *gīnaną. Cognate with Lua error in Module:utilities at line 142: attempt to perform arithmetic on local 'h' (a nil value), Cimbrian gülla (“vomit”), also Middle Low German gōle (“swamp”), Swedish göl (“puddle”), dialectal Norwegian gyl (“cleft”), and Finnish kulju (“quagmire”) (which was borrowed from North Germanic).
