이쁘다

Korean

Etymology

Of native Korean origin. From the obsolete adjective 읻— (it-, “good, fine, exquisite, marvellous”) + —브— (-beu-, adjectival suffix) + —다 (-da). Perhaps related to 예쁘다 (yeppeuda).

This was recognised as standard in the Korean Standard Dictionary in 2015.

Pronunciation

  • (SK Standard/Seoul) IPA(key): [ˈi(ː)p͈ɯda̠]
  • Phonetic hangul: [(ː)]
    • Though still prescribed in Standard Korean, most speakers in both Koreas no longer distinguish vowel length.
