Etymology
Compound of 麻 (ma, “hemp”) + 物 (mono, “thing”).[1][2][3]
Appears in texts from the early 1700s,[1][2][3] but has apparently fallen into disuse. Not included in some dictionaries.[4][5]
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): [ma̠mo̞no̞]
Usage notes
This spelling can be used to indicate a rope or cord made specifically from hemp. The alternative spelling 苧物 can be used to indicate a rope or cord made specifically from ramie. In practice, both spellings may be found used without making a distinction.
