Etymology
Appeared in the book on physics 気海観瀾 (Kikai Kanran) of 1827.[1][2] Until the end of the Edo period, the term was used as a translation of Dutch lucht (“air”).[1][2] In the early Meiji period, it became common as a translation of English atmosphere, and in the late Meiji period, it changed to an abstract meaning as it is today.[1][2]
