From Old Japanese. First cited to the 勝鬘経義疏 (Shōman Gyōgi-sho), part of the 三経義疏 (Sangyō Gisho) Buddhist text dated to 611.[1] In turn, from Middle Chinese 外道 (MC ngwajH dawX). Literally "outside the path".
