Etymology

Coined in Japanese as a compound of 品 (hin, “item, article”) +‎ 詞 (shi, “word”). First appears in reference to Japanese grammar in the 1874 book 小学日本文典 (Shōgaku Nihon Bunten, “Elementary Japan Grammar Book”) by 田中義廉 (Tanaka Yoshikado).[1] Influenced by, and possibly a partial calque of English part of speech, French partie du discours, or Dutch woordsoort (literally “word sort”).[2]
